Spencer County Health Department COVID-19 update

As of last Tuesday, June 2 at 11:59 p.m., Spencer County has had a total of 22 positive cases of COVID-19, with two on home quarantine, 19 recovered and one death.  Those numbers did not change in a week. On Monday, June 8 the state reported  have been 37,623 positive cases in the state of Indiana, with a total of 2,135 deaths.

Spencer County Health Officer, Stan Tretter, MD, supports Governor Holcomb’s Executive Order 20-26 Stage 3, which began on May 24 and lasts through June 14. Stage 3 states the following: 

• Restaurants can continue to be open at 50% seating capacity, with employees to be screened daily and required to wear face coverings.

• High-Risk individuals (65 and older, and those under 65 with health conditions) should use caution and limit exposure in community.

• Religious services may convene inside places of worship if the group remains under 100 individuals and social distance is maintained. 

• Social distancing — maintain a six-foot distance from people other than one’s own household members.

• Cloth face coverings are highly recommended when outside of home.

• Mass gatherings of no more than 100.

• Citizen use of cloth face masks when in public strongly recommended. Some businesses require face coverings to enter.

Centers for Disease Control recommends the following:

• Wearing cloth facemasks when in public settings.

• Practicing social distancing (at least six feet apart).

• Mass gatherings should be limited to less than 100 people..

• Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds often; if hand washing is unavailable, use hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol).

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw tissue in the trash.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Sanitize frequently touched surfaces and objects regularly.

• Avoid handshakes and “high-fives” to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

• Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
