Saint Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad will sponsor a duo recital featuring Alfred Abel, violinist, and Dr. Diane Earle, pianist, at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 17, on the stage in St. Bede Hall. Alfred Abel is a visiting artist in violin, and Dr. Diane Earle is artist in residence at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro. They have performed together for 12 years and have performed at Saint Meinrad numerous times over the years. They will present compositions by Joachim Raff, Max Bruch and Franz Schubert. The recital is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Guest House and student parking lots. The Way Down Wanderers will perform in concert at the historic Astra Theatre in Jasper on Saturday, November 23. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. EST with Indianapolis-based band Bigfoot Yancey scheduled to open at 7:30 p.m. EST. Tickets are on sale now at www.TheNextAct.org. Reserved seating tickets on the main floor and balcony are $14.95 with a $29.95 VIP option. The VIP ticket includes preferred parking in the Matrix parking lot, a $5 concession voucher, and a 30 minute pre-show meet-and-greet with the artist. The Way Down Wanderers’ distinctive sound draws on elements of bluegrass, touches on classic rock influences, and surprises with elements of jazz, classical music, and hip-hop.

The University of Evansville Theatre will present the play Lone Star Spirits on November 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 in the May Studio Theatre on campus. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. November 18-23 and 2 p.m. on November 24. At times hilarious and at times heartbreaking, this family drama is a poignant story about a small-town life, the haunting feeling one experiences by returning to their childhood hometown, and the spooky surprises life always seems to have in store. Church News

The annual deer hunters and family dinner will be held Saturday, November 16 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church in Bristow (20843 State Road 145). The menu is a traditional Thanksgiving meal, including dessert and drink. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 10 years. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call 812-843-4747.

St. Michael Church in Cannelton will hold a Turkey Bingo/Raffle on Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m. at the Cannelton Community Center. Twenty frozen turkeys and five jackpots will be given away. Tickets are $2 for 25 games, and concessions (popcorn, candy, can drinks, burgers and hot dogs) will be available throughout the event. License No. 150650.
The third annual Gospel Sing will be held at Dale Presbyterian Church on Thursday, November 21 in the church sanctuary. Special guests include Cheri Taylor, Wayne Mathies, St. Peter’s Quartet and Don Musselwhite. Sanctuary doors open to everyone at 6 p.m., following the meal at Community Table. Community Table will be serving its annual Thanksgiving dinner prior to the Gospel Sing, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Micah Center. All are welcome to attend both events. There is no charge for the meal or the music.

Health and Wellness

Free Hepatitis C and HIV testing will be available at the Spencer County Health Department in Rockport on Wednesday, November 20 from 10-11:30 a.m. Testing is available to all adults regardless of insurance status. For more information, call the health department at call 812-649-4441.

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center is offering Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED courses on Tuesdays, December 3 and 10 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. EST in the Health and Wellness Classroom at Memorial Southside Office in Jasper. This American Heart Association course provides information on managing illness and injuries in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Skills taught include CPR, AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and infant CPR and relief of choking. To complete the course and receive a course completion card, participants must pass a written first aid test and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPT and AED. Spencer County Council on Aging provides a SWIRCA meal at 11:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday in the Lincoln Manor Community Room, 714 Sycamore St., Rockport. Suggested donation is $3.50 for those 60 and older. Food stamps are accepted. Reservations must be called in 24 hours in advance at 812-649-9828. The meal site is closed on Fridays. Activities such as bingo and games are scheduled throughout the month after lunch.

• The Dale Friends of LHPL Book Store will be open Saturday, November 16 from 9 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in the library basement. The Undergrounds Book Store offers a vast collection of both books and audiovisuals for purchase; hardcover books are $2; trade paperbacks are $1; mass market paperbacks are 50 cents; magazines are 25 cents or five for $1; CDs are two $1; CD boxed sets are $1; DVDs are $3; and audiobooks are $3. Proceeds from book sales benefit all library programs and related events.

• The Dale branch’s second annual Arts & Crafts Fair will be held Saturday, November 16 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this event, where artwork and crafts made by local vendors will be available for purchase.

• The library will hold a National Family Volunteer Day food drive on Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Patrons of all ages are encouraged to attend and are asked to bring non-perishable food donations to the library, where crafts, sweet treats and more will be available for those who attend. At 11 a.m., participants will help load up the donations and walk to the Community Action Center to deliver them, before learning about the Center’s Christmas box program.

• Adult patrons are invited to Bingo for Books on Monday, November 18 from 6-7 p.m. Winners will receive prizes.

• The library board will meet Monday, November 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

• Third Thursday Throwback will be held Thursday, November 21 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. All ages are invited to attend this event, which is themed “A Walton Thanksgiving”. Participants will enjoy Thanksgiving-themed games, popcorn and crafts. Registration is appreciated by calling the library.

Free delivery services are available for all Lincoln Heritage Public Library area homebound residents in North Spencer. Patrons may request large print books, paperbacks, books on CD, music CDs, magazines, word puzzles and DVDs, as well as items for the visually impaired — all at no cost. •Homeschool Hangout will be held Monday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m. This is a time for local homeschool families to meet, learn with and engage with one another.

• Kids of all ages are invited to a Frozen II party at the library on Tuesday, November 19 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Children can attend anytime during that three-hour period (come-and-go format) to celebrate the release of Disney’s Frozen II. Registration is required by calling the library.

• Adult patrons can enjoy an hour of Bingo at the library on Wednesday, November 20 from 10-11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to winners.

• An Adult Crafternoon session will be held Friday, November 15 at 3 p.m. Participants will get to make their own acrylic holiday painting adorned with buttons, which they will then get to take home with them. Call the library to register.

Abe Lincoln American Legion Post 444 in Dale is offering a free Wednesday night meal to all new members who join between now and the end of 2019.
