Zoning Board approves coal mine permit
During the Spencer County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting held last Wednesday night, December 4, at the Spencer County Youth and Community Center, a special exception permit was granted to Sun Energy LLC, a coal mining company headquartered in Huntingburg. The permit will allow the company to surface mine in an area between Mariah Hill and Dale.
Three meetings held earlier in the year ended without conclusion, and a plea for the Spencer County Commissioners to drop the permitting requirement did not pass.
The vote last Wednesday ended with a victory for Sun Energy.
Gary Adams, who had made a similar motion back in April, again made the motion to approve, seconded by Mike Roos. They were joined by Bob Reinke in approving the permit. Neil Collignon voted no and Charlie Waninger abstained.
