The Spencer County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Conservation Crusaders held its second summer outing Thursday morning, this time sending the group to the Lincoln Pioneer Village to learn more about the area’s Lincoln legacy. Conservation Crusaders is a youth program that organizes outings to get kids out into their community and learn more about their environment.
According to Jessica Spencer of the SWCD, this is the second year for the local Conservation Crusaders group. The program was inspired by a similar initiative in Warrick County, which was organized during the pandemic.
Last month the Spencer County group sent kids to the Santa Claus Museum to check out its exhibits and enjoy activities on the grounds. The Lincoln Pioneer Village made last week’s special by offering guided tours of the replica cabins, complete with history lessons about the Lincolns and their neighbors. There were also plenty of outdoor activities to make the most of the sunny weather.
The next outing by the Conservation Crusaders will be at the Col. William Jones Home from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 17.
The SWCD is also organizing several other events to help highlight its work in the county. These include several workshops at Lincoln State Park as well as a fishing competition.
