Dennis Alan Hasting, beloved husband, father, brother and uncle, lost his hard-fought battle with brain cancer on May 6, 2021, at his home in Newburgh. He was surrounded by his wife and daughters.
The middle child of three siblings, Dennis was born on June 26, 1949, in Logansport. Following graduation from Logansport Community High School in 1967, Dennis worked at Chrysler in Kokomo to help pay his way through college, earning a degree in Marketing and Advertising from Indiana University in 1972. After serving in the US Army, Dennis returned to Indiana University to earn his degree in Business and Accounting in 1977. It was during this time that he met his wife, Barbara Bingman, literally the girl next door. Following graduation, Dennis went to work for Amax Coal Company in Indianapolis as a contract administrator. Two years later, in 1979, Dennis and Barb tied the knot. Together, they had two daughters. Dennis returned to school while continuing to work and earned his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis in 1986. In 1991, the family moved to Newburgh when Amax transferred him to the Evansville office. Dennis later worked for the State of Indiana as the Business Administrator for the Department of Corrections, first in Putnamville, and later in Branchville.
While living in Newburgh, Dennis achieved his life’s biggest dream – putting his children through college. His proudest moments were seeing his daughters turn their tassels on graduation day. In his free time, Dennis enjoyed driving up to Patoka Lake and spending the day catching crappy, always hoping to snag the “big one”. He was even able to cajole his daughters into fishing with him, despite their squeamishness with fish and bait. Dennis also looked forward to Spring, so he could go hunting for morel mushrooms in the woods near New Harmony. The whole family was able to enjoy the fruits of his labor, with meals of fried fish and mushrooms.
Dennis retired from work in 2015 and spent the next six years doing what he loved best: fishing on the lake, solving Sudoku puzzles, and driving miles and miles to see his daughters in Fort Myers, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Jessica Hasting and Jennifer (Joseph) Mazzaro; brother, Lynn Hasting; nephews, Chris and Brian Hasting; several great-nieces and -nephews, and his comfort cat, Macy. Preceding him in death were his father, Gerald; mother, Vineta, and sister, Lola Mills. Dennis will be truly missed.
Visitation will be held at Alexander Newburgh Chapel on Monday, May 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, May 11, in Crooked Creek Cemetery near Logansport. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the American Brain Tumor Association in Dennis’s name at give.abta.org.
