Dr. Ted E. Troyer passed away in the presence of his loving family on the morning of October 26, 2021, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 21, 1956, to Ted and Lois Troyer.
Ted attended Ballard High School in Louisville, Kentucky (class of 1974), followed by the University of Kentucky, where he earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1978. He then attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 1982. He completed his medical residency in Family Medicine at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville in 1985. Dr. Troyer obtained board certification in Emergency Medicine and went on to have a rewarding 34-year career providing care at Warrick Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, and Deaconess Gateway Hospital, where he was a founding member of the Emergency Department. He also served as medical director of Emergency Medical Services for Spencer County, Warrick County and Alcoa. He was a devoted member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and his faith was a central part of his life.
Ted believed in living life to the fullest. He was a true family man, devoted husband, and proud father of his five daughters, a.k.a. the “Blonde Planet.” He never missed an opportunity for travel or adventure. He could often be found hiking in a national park, boogie-boarding in an ocean, flying the skies with his pilot daughter Cathy, or skiing a double black diamond ski slope out West. He was just as busy on the home front – planting his garden, riding his horses, swimming laps, cycling, and tending to his walnut trees. In addition to all of this, he always found time to cheer on his beloved Kentucky Wildcats. It is rumored he may have set off front yard fireworks on more than one occasion to celebrate a national championship.
Ted was loved and respected by friends and coworkers alike. He was an approachable, kind physician with a room-brightening smile and an extraordinary bedside manner. He was well-known in the ER for proudly displaying a picture of his wife and daughters taped to his computer during every shift. After each shift, he returned to his favorite place in the world, his farm, where he made countless memories with his wife, raising their five daughters.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 38 years, Dr. Brenda Troyer; daughters, Dr. Carrye Daum (Michael) of Newburgh, Dr. Jenny Stockburger (Chris) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Dr. Julie Eichner (Derek) of Evansville, Dr. Mary Dy (Aaron) of Boston, Massachusetts; and First Officer Cathy Sullivan (Colin) of Tampa, Florida. Most importantly, he served as Papaw to nine grandchildren: Carter, Hudson, Walker and Tucker Daum; Ben and Sophie Stockburger; and Luke, Abby and Lauren Eichner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lynn Caudill, and grandson, Gabriel Eichner.
The family would like to extend gratitude to those who have supported Ted during his illness, including friends as well as those involved in his medical care.
Visitation will take place on Friday, October 29 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at Alexander Newburgh Chapel. Additional visitation will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Rockport, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.
