Accident at Taco Bell
Ferdinand Police investigated a minor accident that occurred in the Taco Bell parking lot at 12:45 p.m. last Wednesday. Amy Conley, 60, of Dale, was waiting in line at the fast food restaurant’s drive-thru when, she allegedly told police, her foot slipped off the brake and her 2016 Ford Fiesta rolled forward, striking a 2020 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 39-year-old Kristen Meyer of Huntingburg. Neither driver was injured. Both vehicles sustained approximately $2,000 in damage but were able to be driven from the scene. Conley was faulted for the accident and advised by officers of following too closely.
Labor Day collision
Two vehicles were involved in an accident that occurred on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. According to the report, 47-year-old Karen Ketzner of Ferdinand struck a 2006 Pontiac on the driver’s side passenger door and quarter panel after making a right turn from Industrial Park Road onto Southview Drive. Ketzner had allegedly crossed over into the right turn lane, where the driver of the Pontiac, 20-year-old Livia Boeglin of Ferdinand, was attempting to turn onto SR 162. Neither driver was injured in the accident. Total damages were estimated at approximately $2,000.
Jasper Police
OWI arrest
At approximately 3:15 p.m. on Monday, August 31, an officer with the Jasper Police Department conducted a traffic stop at west 6th Street and St. Charles Street, on a 1997 Mercury passenger car for expired registration. Upon further investigation, and issuing a field sobriety test and portable breath test, the officer determined that the driver of the Mercury, 44-year-old Krista Schmitt of Jasper, was impaired. Schmitt was transported to the Jasper Police Department for a certified breath test, which showed her blood alcohol content to be 0.11. Schmitt was arrested and charged with OWI endangerment (class A misdemeanor) and OWI (class C misdemeanor). Due to having a prior OWI conviction in 2019, she was also charged with OWI with a prior conviction, a level 6 felony. Schmitt was also given citations for expired registration and operating with a suspended license.
Man arrested for battery
Jasper Police responded to the report of a physical altercation at the northside Citgo gas station at 5 p.m. last Monday, August 31. Upon arriving, officers determined that 42-year-old Anthony W. Nash, Jr. of Otwell had been involved in a physical altercation with another male subject. After further investigation, Nash was placed under arrest and charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony.
Huntingburg Police
OWI and drug arrest
While on patrol at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday night, a Huntingburg police officer observed a 1983 Ford truck driving left of center and making unsafe lane changes at 22nd Street and US 231. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the truck as well as a roadside interview with the driver, 35-year-old Valerie Messmer of Huntingburg. Police K9 Ester also conducted a K9 sniff test on the truck, and a search of the vehicle recovered marijuana, crystal methamphetamine and paraphernalia. After failing a field sobriety test, Messmer was transported to Memorial Hospital for a blood draw and was eventually charged with OWI while under the influence of marijuana (class B misdemeanor), possession of methamphetamine (level 6 felony), and possession of marijuana (class A misdemeanor).
