Jimmy S. Vance of Phoenix, Arizona, a retired public educator and superintendent of Mohave County High School District, died Saturday, February 11, 2023.
He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky to Homer and Fannie (Mohon) Vance. A disabled Korean War veteran, he was honorably retired from the Army in 1956. He graduated from Chrisney High School in 1951, the University of Arizona (BA 1960, MA 1962) and Arizona State University (EdD, 1972).
Jimmy retired in his late fifties and spent much of his retirement traveling extensively with his wife Delores and spending time with family. Although he lived in Arizona for the majority of his life, he maintained close ties with family members and his former classmates in Indiana and Kentucky.
Survivors include his son, Rex, and daughter, Maureen W. Valdez, both of Arizona; sister, Anna; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews located throughout the US.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Fannie Vance; brothers, Hubert, Rex and S.J.; sisters, Eleanor, Chlorine and Daisy; and his wife of 62 years, Delores M. Long.
