Johana B. Vaal, 96, of Ferdinand, formerly of St. Meinrad, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand.
She was born September 2, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan to Bernard and Lottie (Vaeth) Bischof. She married Eugene “Eugh” Vaal on April 24, 1946, in St. Meinrad Archabbey Church.
A retired employee of General Electric in Tell City, during World War II she worked at Kelsey Hays Machine Gun Factory in Plymouth, MI.
She was a member of St. Meinrad Parish and its St. Elizabeth’s Society, Hoosier Campers and Happy Go Lucky Campers. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time with grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Gene (Paula) Vaal of Celestine, Bernard “Benny” Vaal and Jack (Nan) Vaal, all of Jasper; two daughters, Georgia Tretter of Dale and Therese Windell of Evansville; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Smith; a son-in-law, Kenneth Tretter; and a daughter-in-law, Gail Kiefer Vaal.
Funeral services for Johana Vaal were held Tuesday, July 30, in St. Meinrad Church with burial following in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com.
