John “Abner” Conner, 85, was born November 16, 1936 in Rockport. He quietly passed away on July 14, 2022, after living with Parkinson’s disease for many years.

Abner was residing in Bloomington, at Bell Trace Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Robert Conner, and his mother, Lucy Ann (Payne) Conner.

He is survived by his brother, Philip Lynn Conner (Hazel); his sister, Joyce Fay Thomas (Steve); four nieces and nephews, Julie Ann (Conner) Walters (Brad), Carol Lynn (Conner) Sanders (David), David B. Thomas (Summer), and Susan Fay (Thomas) Devries (Keith); and nine great-nieces and -nephews.

He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Abner was a 1956 graduate of Rockport High School. He also served in the National Guard and the United States Army. Over the course of his life, he worked in carpentry and farming. He loved tinkering, gardening, watching local sports, attending auctions, and discussing news with his buddies. He loved cooking and dancing with friends on the weekend. Abner was a pleasant people person and was always ready for a joyful conversation.

Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion (Conner’s Chapel) Cemetery in Santa Claus.

Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
