John Allen “Butch” Murphy, 76, of Rockport, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky.

John was born in Rockport on June 16, 1946, the son of the late Earl Edgar and Nola (Payne) Meyer.

John had several jobs growing up and throughout his life. As a young boy, he would make potholders and sell them to the ladies around town. At 15 years of age, he sold Grit papers on the street corner. He had served in the United States Air Force as a young man and also sold insurance for Western & Southern for several years.

John had several hobbies, including playing golf, shooting pool, and playing cards. He also loved to camp and play baseball, and he loved his dogs.

He was a 50-year member of Rockport American Legion Post 254, a member of the No. 561 Laborer’s Union, and was a Teamster. He also was a member of Rockport Masonic Lodge No. 112 and Hadi Shrine of Evansville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger sister, Jenny Meredith; his sister-in-law, Lisa Gibbs; and his mother-in-law, Zonna Coomer.

John is survived by his wife, Pamela (Coomer) Murphy of Rockport; his children, MaKayla Beth Murphy of Rockport, Brian Payne and his wife, Amber of Columbus, and Damon Cutrell and his wife, Dee, of Lewisport, KY; his grandchildren, Colby and Dawson Payne, Trenity, Wesley and Kayliee Richmond, and Kensli Thurby; his brothers, Edgar Meyer and Allen Meyer and his wife, Angela; his sisters, Mildred Harris of Rockport, Donna Wargel and her husband, Bernard, of Chrisney and Vickie Fisher of Waynetown; his father-in-law, James Coomer of Richland; brothers-in-law, Scott Coomer and his wife, Peggy of Rockport and Pastor Tim Coomer and his wife, Michelle, of Rockport; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Pastor Tim Coomer officiating. Burial will follow at James Parker Cemetery in Hatfield.

Visitation is 4 until 8 p.m., Monday, January 23, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
