Mitchell N. Montgomery, born in Evansville, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 65 on Saturday, February 3, 2024, while on a 15-day cruise through the Panama Canal in Guatemala with his wife of 41 years, his best friend, Jennifer.
For those lucky enough to know him, Mitch was a joy to be around. He was full of stories and had a gift for filling the room with his warm and contagious laughter. He seldom met a stranger; always eager to share his positive outlook and love of life with everyone he met.
Mitch graduated from South Spencer High School and completed his BS at Purdue University. He held many positions throughout his employment in the power industry. He worked for various power companies and in 1987, he started his 34-year career with AEP’s construction division, spending most of his career in operations at the Lawrenceburg and Rockport plants. He always said that everyone should love their job as much as he did.
Mitch retired in 2021. Upon retirement, Mitch spent even more time enjoying family and friends, golfing, reading, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson “Monty” and Mayola Montgomery.
Mitch is survived by his wife, Jennifer Montgomery; his son, Bradley Mitchell Montgomery (Lauren Albensi, best friend); sister Diana Lappas (Bob) of North Carolina, brother Mark (Cathy) of Georgia, and sister Shelley Santry (Shannon) of Kentucky; his in-laws, Robert and Barbara Varble and Larry and Sue Nesler; his brothers-in-law, John Santry, Scott Varble, Eric Varble (Heather), and Jason Nesler (Sarah); many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and a lifetime of friends.
Visitation will be held at Boultinghouse Funeral Home, Rockport on Friday, February 23 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, February 24 at 10 a.m. with a service at 11 a.m. The family requests that everyone join them after the service for a celebration of Mitch’s life at the Grandview Civic Center in Grandview, at 1 p.m. to share your favorite Mitch stories.
