The Spencer County Public Library’s Rockport branch welcomed a crowd of festive visitors, and one very special guest, to a holiday party last Thursday evening. The guest of honor was Clara the Reindeer of Santa’s Reindeer Ranch, the eight-month-old companion to Comet and Blitzen who also currently reside at the ranch.
Clara was younger than some of the kids who came out to see her, and she entertained quite a few visitors as the night went on. At birth, Clara weighed about 12 pounds. She currently stands at about 90 pounds and will likely grow to more than 200 pounds as a full adult. Male reindeer tend to weigh in about 100 pounds heavier than females. Clara’s antlers are still very thin, but will get bigger every year as she sheds them in the warmer months and grows them out again for winter.
The library had a host of other reindeer games for visiting kids as well, including various crafts, inflatables and of course the chance to check out holiday-themed books. Food trucks were also set up outside to provide treats for those visiting the library or taking a stroll through town to enjoy local light displays.
