The Spencer County Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with the PUSH-IT (Promoting Urban Soil Health in Towns) group, is handing out FREE cover crop seeds for fall planting.
Cover crops are important to establish in the fall on your old garden site to help promote soil health and for weed suppression, nutrient scavenging, reducing soil compaction and producing nutrients.
They are giving out a mix of oats, winter peas and radishes to be planted by September 30. Each bag covers 1,000 square feet and should be broadcast over the garden after removing weeds and crop residues. Rake to prepare the soil and rake again gently after broadcasting the seeds.
Call the Spencer County Soil and Water Conservation District Monday through Friday to pick up your cover crop seeds. They have a limited amount of seed and it will be a first-come-first-serve opportunity. Those with questions should call Olivia Summers at the Spencer County SWCD at 812-649-9136, ext. 3.
