Ulis O. Jones, 96, of Santa Claus, passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
He was born on October 18, 1924, in Sloan, Iowa, to the late Edgar F. and Florence (Sams) Jones. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II as a SeaBee in the South Pacific. He served in the Marshall Islands and also on Iwo Jima during the war.
He worked for the government for 35 years as a Geodetic Surveyor with NOAA and later in the private sector for several years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and following Heritage Hills sports for many years.
Ulis is survived by his son, Don W. (Staci) Jones of Santa Claus, and grandchildren, Zack Jones and Cade Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, in 2018; his son, Donnie Ray Jones; his brother, Wallace Jones; and his sisters, Cleone Smith, Lorraine Nord and Margaret Eskridge.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 17, from 12-3 p.m. at Boultinghouse Funeral Home, Youngblood Chapel, 36 E. Market St, Chrisney. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. and will be officiated by Pastor Steve Beck. Burial with military honors will be at Garden of Memory in Gentryville, immediately after the service.
