William E. “Bill” Nix, Jr., 88 of Rockport, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.
Bill was born October 5, 1932, in Spencer County to William E., Sr. and Clara (Gasser) Nix.
In 1952, Private 1st Class William E. Nix Jr. was a member of the infantry and engineering divisions of the United States Army Seoul Military Post 8096th Unit during the Korean Conflict. He received the National Defense Service Medal, and successfully completed the Fire Fighter course for the Eighth United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Bill served as Commander of the American Legion in Rockport, and was the manager for the 1974 Post 254 American Legion World Series Finalist team. He had the privilege of participating in the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana in 2019 out of Evansville. Bill was a baseball fan and enjoyed watching his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids in their many activities.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Phyllis Nix DeWeese; sister, Mary Withers; and brothers, Clayton and Jack Nix.
Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Weatherholt Nix; his daughters, Donna Driskell (Kim) and Alana Swanker (Jim); his sisters, Ella Crume, Wanneta Payton and Marsha Windisch. He leaves behind a legacy with his seven grandkids, Lori Page, Erika Driskell, Amee Hadley, William “Drew” Driskell, Leah Power, Dustin Sarver and Jennifer (Zeb) Clutter; 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Grandview Cemetery in Grandview at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 30. Newburgh American Legion Kapperman Post No. 44 will conduct Military Honors.
