William Ray Schaefer, 92, of Chrisney, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at his home surrounded by family.

Ray was born on September 6, 1929, in Fayette, Iowa, to William Carl and Verla Ellen (Scales) Schaefer. 

Ray served in the United States Army during the Korean War and he was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

Raised on a farm, farming was Ray’s passion. He enjoyed raising tobacco and animals, along with growing a huge garden for many years. He had also worked road construction for many years.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his siblings, Tom Schaefer, Lyle Schaefer, Mary Scott, Viola Devillez, Helen Schaefer, Cora Miley, Rosie Durbin and Evie Turner; and his great-granddaughter, Olivia Tru Ann Montgomery.

Ray is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Schaefer; his children, Billy Schaefer and his wife, Tammy, Randy Schaefer and his wife, Renee, Jeff Schaefer, Nancy Myers and her husband, Kevin, Pam Ludwig, Jim Nugent, Lloyd Nugent and his wife, Tracy, Kevin Nugent and his wife, Carole, Karen Parnell and her husband, Chris, and Kathy Hughes; 30 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Grace Talbert; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Services are 2 p.m., Friday, September 10, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Pastor Ron Marcoux officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chrisney.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home.
