Mercedes S. Spellmeyer, 94 of Jasper, passed away at 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper.

She was born in St. Phillips, Indiana on November 29, 1925, to Joseph and Blandina (Merkley) Schenk. She married Norbert J. Spellmeyer on September 24, 1946, in St. Phillips Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on January 28, 2006.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, the St. Joseph St. Ann’s Society and the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella.

She was known for her cookies and orange slice cake, which she distributed during the holidays. She enjoyed playing bingo, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Medellin (Robert) of Cincinnati, OH, and Mary Jane Miller (Rodney) of Jasper; five sons; James Spellmeyer (Mary) of Jasper, Donnie Spellmeyer (Kathy) of Gentryville, Robert “Red” Spellmeyer (Joyce) of Celestine, David Spellmeyer (Connie) of Jasper, and Norbert Spellmeyer Jr. of Jasper; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her husband were one son, Thomas Spellmeyer; two grandsons, Andy Spellmeyer and Jason Spellmeyer; and one great-granddaughter, Cayla Feltman. She was also the last surviving member of her Schenk family, with three sisters, Anne Wagner, Lucille Titzer, and Clara Mae Spellmeyer, and one brother, Urban Schenk, preceding her in death.

Private funeral services will be held at Becher-Kluesner Funeral Homes in Jasper, with entombment at Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.
