Arna Jean (Peter) Rice, 72, passed away unexpectedly on February 9, 2022, at her home in Spencer County.

She was born on December 14, 1949 to Arnold Peter and Hilda (Murphy) Peter Schwartz.

A 1969 graduate of Tell City High School, Arna married Michael H. Rice on April 27, 1974, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City.

To know Arna Jean Rice was to love her. Her positive personality, dedication, hard work and overall zest for life was a recipe for a success as a business owner. She started her well known formal wear business, Rice N’ Ribbon, in a bedroom in her home, then moved it to her garage and later to its current location on Main Street in her beloved Rockport, 47 years ago.

When traveling “to market” Arna didn’t just buy the next season’s best gowns, she shared dinner with designers, fellow store owners who became treasured friends and brand representatives alike, all the while making those for which she crossed paths feel like an old friend. Known as Southern Indiana’s “best kept secret,” Arna housed gowns from some of the world’s leading designers inside her brick-and-mortar Rice N’ Ribbon. Arna always worked hard for “her girls”, making sure those from all walks of life were able to find their own perfect dress. Certified as a pageant judge in the state of Kentucky, she also was active in organizing many pageants for Spencer County over the years and offered coaching as well.

Arna was always trying to promote Spencer County to anyone who would listen and see what potential was there. She had served on many boards over the years including Reo Water Board and others that were successful in bringing new industry to Spencer County, A.K. Steel being just one of many.

She loved entertaining with her husband, whether it was family or friends, always making her guests feel welcome and offering an evening to remember. Arna loved to cook but baking was her favorite.

She and Mike shared a love of classic cars and were members of Shelby American Automotive Club where they served as board members for over 40 years.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Mike Rice, Richland; son, Mark Rice and his daughters, Maddison and Amanda Rice of Newburgh; a brother, Dale Peter (Livy), Ellettsville and sister, Jan Gray (Bob), Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Besides her parents, a brother, Larry Peter and sister, Lana Jo Lashley preceded her in death.

As per her wishes, a celebration of Arna’s life will be announced later in the Spring. Her family appreciates the tremendous outpouring of love and affection for her and would be comforted by hearing your favorite fond memory of her at www.huberfuneralhome.net.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in her memory as there were several that were close to her heart.

Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, will be assisting Arna’s family with her wishes.
