Oma Genell Kanzler, 85, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at Jasper Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 31, 1937, in Chrisney, daughter of the late Carl and Eloise (Crafton) James. She was a 1955 graduate of Chrisney High School.

Genell was united in marriage on September 6, 1958, with George “Fred” Kanzler. Genell worked at Swift in Evansville where she met Fred. She also worked at the Spencer County ASCS office and then devoted her life to raising her two daughters, opting to stay home with them. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Chrisney and was a member of the Women’s Guild. Genell enjoyed her family time along with sewing, crafts, baking, genealogy and gardening.

Survivors include her husband George “Fred” Kanzler; her children, Julie (John) Benningfield of Santa Claus and Joni Kanzler (Mark Schroeder) of South Bend; sister, Sandy Tullis of Santa Claus; three grandchildren, Shawn Benningfield, Matt Benningfield and Brittany Sollman; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her brothers, Dean, Bob, and Dick James.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 9, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery, in Lamar. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, December 9, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Heritage Public Library in Dale.
