Susan Irene Waterman, 75, of Tennyson, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025 after a long and brave battle with cancer.
She was born May 3, 1949 in Tell City to Murl and Irene Howe.
Susan “Sam” graduated from Tell City High School in 1967, then Indiana University with a degree in Physical Therapy in 1971. She received a master’s degree in PT from the University of Indianapolis. She started her PT career at the Cerebral Palsy Clinic at Riley Hospital. She then enjoyed 35 years with the Dubois-Spencer-Perry Exceptional Children’s Coop working with students in the schools and preschools in those counties. Through her career as a PT she touched the lives of many hundreds of children and adults.
She was also deeply involved with the Spencer County Humane Society, fostering many dogs and helping find homes for innumerable pets. She volunteered as co-administrator for the Spencer County Animal Shelter for its first five years.
Susan is survived by her husband of 52 years Mark Waterman; sisters-in-law Anna Lou (Jim) Howe of Evanston, Jo Beth (Ed) Chambers of Ft. Wayne and Christine (Shaun) Lynch of Linthicum Heights, MD; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Jim “Lefty” Howe, Alvin “Abe” Howe and David Howe, as well as sisters-in-law Marjo Howe and Jayne Waterman.
The family extends their gratitude to the wonderful staffs at the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center in Jasper and IU’s Simon Cancer Center for their years of caring support. Also many thanks to Woodmont Health Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassionate care.

Visitation was held Febuary 6 at Boultinghouse Funeral Home Youngblood Chapel in Chrisney, followed by a service with Pastor Matt Hall officiating.
