Martha Jean Hempfling, 66, of Ferdinand passed away Sunday, September 7, 2025 in Deaconess Memorial Medical Center in Jasper. Martha was born on October 4, 1958 to Oscar and Marie (Oeding) Gessner. She was united in marriage with Jerry L. Hempfling on June 28, 1980 in Tell City.
Martha was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church. She enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles and was an avid reader.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Jerry L. Hempfling; two sons, Adam Hempfling of Santa Claus and Travis (Ashley) Hempfling of Indianapo- lis; three grandchildren, Mason, Kaden and Landon Hempfling; two brothers, Frank (Marie) Gessner of Ferdinand and Tony (Don- na) Gessner of St. Meinrad; two sisters, Paula (Tom) Vonderheide of Ferdinand and Clara (LeeRay) Temple of St. Meinrad; sisters-in- law, Joyce Gessner of Celes- tine and Bonita Gessner of Jasper; two brothers-in-law, Roch Gehlhausen and Bill Meyer both of Jasper.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Marie Gessner; brothers, Allen and Mark Gessner; and two sisters, Marlene Gehlhausen and Carol Meyer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, September 11 at 10 a.m. in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10 and continuing on Thursday, September 11 from 7 until 9:30 a.m. at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand.
