Alan Wayne Nass, 80, of Huntingburg, passed away at 10:35 a.m. on Monday, December 20, 2021, at his home.
He was born January 6, 1941, in Stendal, to Chester and Matella (Patberg) Nass. They moved to Huntingburg in the fall of 1941. Alan graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1959 and was class Valedictorian. He was selected as the Outstanding Citizen of Hoosier Boy’s State in 1958 and was Delegate to Boy’s Nation in Washington D.C. the same year. He was on the Indiana All-State Football Team in 1958 and the Indiana All-Star Basketball Team in 1959.
Alan was offered 50 college scholarships in football and basketball; he chose Georgia Tech University and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering. He was then awarded the Callaway Mills Scholarship and graduated in 1965 with a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering. During his time at Georgia Tech, he played basketball, earning several awards and was inducted into the Georgia Tech University Athletic Hall of Fame. Alan graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in 1968, where he was class Valedictorian. He received his funeral director license and went on to be President of Nass and Son, Inc. Funeral Home for 40 years. In 1984, he was made a member of the Silver Anniversary All-State High School Basketball team; and in 2013 was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Alan was recognized for his many achievements; these range from athleticism, academics, being a business man, family man and most importantly a friend to many.
Alan married Connie Kay Aufderhar on June 25, 1961, in Salem United Church of Christ. Together, they had three children, Susan, Andrew and Stephen. Alan was a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg and was active in teaching youth, young adults and adult classes for many years. He served four terms on the Salem Church Council and two terms on the Board of Directors of the Indiana-Kentucky Conference of the United Church of Christ. He chaired various Conference committees on social justice issues, and preached at many churches in Indiana and Kentucky.
Alan served as a member of the original Southwest Dubois County School Corporation for three terms, from 1969-1979, and was President of the Indiana School Boards Association from 1977-1978. He was a current member of the Oakland City University Board of Trustees, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors, and the Dubois County Grand Lodge No. 520, Free & Accepted Masons.
Alan is survived by his wife, Connie Nass of Huntingburg; two sons, Andy (Sammy Stills) Nass of Huntingburg and Stephen Nass of Evansville; his sister, Phyllis Perry of Auburn; and by two granddaughters, Alexis Mishel of Westfield and Anna Mishel of Denver, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his daughter, Susan Mishel, who passed away on September 14, 2020; and brother-in-law, Keith Perry.
Funeral services for Alan Nass will be held at 11 a.m. E.S.T., on Thursday, December 23, at Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Rev. Mike Thompson will officiate at the service.
Friends may call for visitation at Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2-7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, and also at the church from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, prior to the funeral. A Masonic vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
