Anna Mae Songer, age 96, of Huntingburg, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019, at her home.

She was born March 12, 1923, in Huntingburg, to Joseph A. and Philomena (Hollander) Griesinger; and married Glen W. Songer on February 19, 1946, in Mooresville.

Anna Mae graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1941 and attended Welborn Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville from 1942-45. She worked as a registered nurse for 51 years, the last 33 years in Obstetrics/Gynecology at both Stork Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg. She also worked at Welborn Hospital in Evansville, Riley Hospital and Methodist in Indianapolis, Boehne Tuberculosis Hospital in Evansville, General Electric in Huntingburg as an Industrial nurse, and as a private duty and Red Cross nurse in Huntingburg and Evansville.

With her husband she owned and operated Songer’s OK Grocery in Huntingburg until 1963 at which time she returned to full time nursing at Stork Hospital. She was a firm believer in prayer and when recently asked what her hobbies were she replied, “Prayer, I pray for everybody.” Anna Mae was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister, visited the homebound and brought them communion for over 25 years.

A life-long resident of Huntingburg, she was one of its biggest supporters. Anna Mae and her husband, Glen “Windy” Songer, were active in the Dubois County Democratic Party. She was a member of the Serra Club, volunteered with a crisis prevention hotline, and enjoyed going on bus tours.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away February 25, 2012; a sister, Helen Tyring; and an infant brother, Jerome Griesinger.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gwen (Jesse) Barnett of Evansville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Gregory M. (Marsha) Songer, Bill (Julie) Songer, Joseph A. Songer and John Songer all of Huntingburg; 15 grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Aaron, Rachel, Mara, Lauren, Jeff, Josh, Jacob, Adam, Hillary, Andrew, Drew, Ian and Chloe; 14 great-grandchildren, Prudence, Tallulah, Davin, Aidan, Breckin, Jude, Madeline, Mikala, Brayden, Madison, Maci, Kru, Archer, Dean, and Mabel; one great-great-grandchild, Eleanor; nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass of Christian burial for Anna Mae Songer was held at 10 a.m., EST, Tuesday, December 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial following in the church cemetery.

Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg handled all arrangements Memorial Hospital’s Nursing Honor Guard conduct a vigil service prior to the Mass.
