October is National Farm to School Month, which encourages schools to emphasize education on nutrition and the connection between their communities and food providers. One activity observed throughout the Midwest is the “Apple Crunch,” allowing students and staff to share a healthy snack together with a synchronized bite from an apple. Chrisney Elementary was among the local schools participating this year, with the student body “crunching” together in sync Thursday morning.

Tyler Hermann of Lakeview Orchards provided enough apples for the whole school to enjoy and talked to students about the health benefits of the popular fruit.

“I get to grow these every year in your backyard,” he said.

Chrisney Elementary followed up the “Apple Crunch” with a quick lap around the school’s trail, celebrating a belated Walk to School Day that had been postponed due to rain earlier this month.

After the ceremonious first bite, students were free to mingle and finish off their apples on a pleasant Thursday morning.
