Dazed.
Confused.
And a little out of sorts.
When someone runs into a brick wall, that’s kind of how he/she feels.
That said, the Heritage Hills boys basketball team probably made Vincennes Lincoln experience that not-so-pleasant feeling during their hardwood matchup last week.
The Patriots scored the first 20 points of the contest to basically put the Alices in a bewildered state en route to an impressive 65-41 triumph in the opening round of the PSC Holiday Classic last Thursday afternoon in Lincoln City.
Heritage Hills coach Nate Hawkins said the game played out the way he had hoped.
“My biggest thing was being able to take them out of what they wanted to do offensively. We wanted to dictate the game with our defense,” explained the Patriot boss. “I thought that’s what we were able to do.”
Boy, did they.
“Vincennes is a much better team than they showed here, but we really limited the touches of their top players and that helped us get a big lead,” said Hawkins. “Before today, they were in every game they played. We just got off to a perfect start and kind of rolled after that. Everything fell into place. It was a nice win against a potential sectional opponent.”
Hawkins said he expects a much tougher battle from Boonville — who edged previously undefeated South Spencer 72-70 in double overtime in the PSC Holiday Classic opener last Thursday — in the second round of the tournament.
“Boonville is a very dangerous basketball team. They’ve got tough seniors who have played a lot of basketball over the years. It’s a talented group,” concluded the Patriot coach. “I told our guys when we get back here tonight you better be ready to go because they’re very capable. They showed that against South Spencer earlier today. I expect a real battle.”
