Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), an operating company of American Electric Power (AEP), has presented grants totaling nearly $50,000 from AEP to 21 schools and organizations — including South Spencer High School — to promote STEM education and improve student achievement.
Teachers and schools receiving the grants are located within the I&M service area or in communities with major I&M facilities.
“I&M is critically aware of the need for strong STEM education programs,” said Aaron Walker, Rockport Plant Manager. “We are proud to help students and leaders of area teams as they pursue firsthand experiences in science and technology and explore career opportunities.”
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics grants are for teams of students who build robots to compete in local, regional and international events. Those grants range from $250 to $6,000, depending on the robotics program level. FIRST is a multi-national robotics competition that teams, professionals and high school students to solve an engineering problem in an intense and competitive way. FIRST competitions are high-tech spectator sporting events demonstrating participants’ success in brainstorming, teamwork and meeting deadlines.
The South Spencer High School grant will help support the school’s robotics team.
