Roman B. Tempel, 94, of Ferdinand passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at home surrounded by his family.
Roman was born January 14, 1926, in Ferdinand to John and Sophia (Fleck) Tempel. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Pund on July 3, 1951 in Saint Ferdinand Church.
Roman was a lifelong member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and The St. Joseph’s Sodality and a member of the Ferdinand Senior Citizens.
He retired from D.M.I. Furniture after 43 ½ years, and after retirement drove for the Meals on Wheels program for 15 years. He was WWII Army veteran, and a member of the first Honor Flight in 2014. Roman was a torch bearer for the Indiana Bicentennial. He was a life member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 (past commander) and a member of the Huntingburg V.F.W. Post 2366.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Tempel; seven daughters, JoRene Richard of Ferdinand, Rebecca Hedinger of Ferdinand, Michelle Brockman of St. Meinrad, Cindy (Terry) Faulkenberg of St. Meinrad, Cheryl (Bobby) Childress of St. Henry, Karen (Larry) Franchville of Bandon, and Sharon (Joe) Jones of English; three sons, LeRay (Clara) Tempel of St. Meinrad, Paul (Julie) Tempel of Huntingburg, and Jeff (Tracy) Tempel of Ferdinand; 37 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Krampe of Ferdinand.
Roman was preceded in death by eight brothers, Joe, Charles, Jerome, Hubert, Leo, Albert, Dennis and Gilbert Tempel; one sister, Marie Tempel; and sons-in-law, Mike Richard, Dennis Hedinger and Mark Brockman.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, in St. Ferdinand Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
