James “Jim” Marshall, 87, of Selvin, passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at Willowdale Village in Dale.
He was born July 16, 1933, in Williams, to Charles and Laura (Buse) Marshall of Selvin. Jim graduated from Selvin High School and, after serving in Korea with the United States Army, completed his education at Oakland City and Evansville Colleges. He was the principal of Andersonville Grade School and a teacher and coach at Holland, Spurgeon and Forest Park schools. Jim and his wife, Patsy, owned and operated the Selvin General Store and the Yellow Banks Recreation Center and Pottery.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed working on the property at Yellow Banks, quail hunting with his beloved bird dogs, gardening and hunting mushrooms. He was a creative person who enjoyed turning pottery for visitors, especially at the Yellow Banks Craft Fair. Always quick to smile, he loved spending time with his family, made friends easily, loved to tell a good story or pull a good prank. He was always willing to help his friends, family or community, even serving as a county commissioner.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patsy (Griffin) Marshall of Selvin; three children, Steve Marshall of Selvin, Becky (George) Nord of Heilman and Scott (Kim) Marshall of Selvin; one sister, Marilyn Kluger of Noblesville; grandchildren, Jana (Ben) Jenkins, Stephanie Marshall, Hannah Marshall, Chelsea (Tyler) O’Brien, Ali (Alex) Oliver, Jake (Elizabeth) Kingrey, and Kyle (Lakyn) Kingrey; and great-grandchildren, Drew, Jake, Corbin, Evie, Fletcher, Beau, Reece, Jaxon, Brynlee and Kix.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Marshall; and one brother-in-law, Kurt Kluger.
Private funeral services for Jim Marshall will be held at 10 a.m. CST on Tuesday, December 29, at Selvin United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Selvin Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Holland American Legion Post No. 343. Pastor Terry Kamman will officiate the service.
