Norma Jean Hargis, 88, of Rockport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.
Jean was born in Union City, Tennessee on January 10, 1933, to the late Norman E. and Genevieve (Boyd) Morgan.
A member of The Refuge and Tri-Kappa, she had worked as a newspaper editor and as a naturalist at Lincoln State Park. In her spare time, she enjoyed cross-stitch, knitting, sewing, making jewelry, basket-making, bird-watching and attending sporting events with her husband. She was an avid fan of American Legion Post 254 Baseball.
She will always be remembered as an amazing grandmother. The love and patience she gave to each and every grandchild will long be remembered.
Jean is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jerry Hargis; her children, Jerriann Burroughs (John), Joe Hargis (Katy), Jay Hargis (Christie), James Hargis, and Jon Hargis; her grandchildren, Brian Burns, Emily Strobo, Whitney Williams, Matthew Jacob , Jenny, Sam and Anne Hargis, Jaymie Fadorsen, William, Helen, Laurie, Andrew and Ceci Hargis, Olivia and Lucas Hurst, Jonathan Elliot, and Tyler Hargis; and her great-grandchildren, Cole, Cassidy and Cali Woodburn, Briley and Bre Burns, Frank and Reid Strobo, Palmer and Walker Williams, Charlotte, Otto and Marigold Hargis, Winter Lautner, Greg and Alec Hargett, Evangeline and Eli Portillo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her foster son, Curt Wilgus.
Services are 11 a.m., Saturday, August 7, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Pastor Jason Toler officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is 4 until 7 p.m., Friday, August 6, and 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
