Doris K. Hughes, 91, was born March 5, 1935, to Lloyd and Evelyn (née Beeler) Kramer.

Doris had three siblings, Dennis Kramer, Leon Kramer and Donna Eberle. She was salutatorian of her class at Chrisney High School and went on to graduate from Lockyear Business School of Evansville.

She married the love of her life Norman O. Hughes in May of 1957 and had two sons, Norman L. Hughes and Don Hughes. She had four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She worked for the Purdue Extension Office for 38 years, became Spencer County Auditor for four years and helped set a legal precedent for hiring practices in the state of Indiana.

She had many hobbies that she was exceptional at such as cross stitching, bird watching, and was a successful gardener of vegetables and gorgeous flowers. She was also an IU basketball and Indiana Fever fan.

She enjoyed helping on the family’s farm and seeing the spring calves take their first steps. Above all she loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. She sat with numerous people helping to usher them through their final days. She always made sure everyone who visited left with full hearts and stomachs.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and many friends, including Mayor Nedra Groves.

She will be remembered for her nourishing Nana recipes, her amazing way of knowing all the answers on Jeopardy, and the light she brought into every room.

She is survived by Donna Eberle, Norman L. Hughes, Don Hughes (Junetta), four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed at her dining table by her good friends at Oakwood Nursing Home as well.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Grandview Civic Center on October 3 at 1 p.m. in her honor.
