Duane Milton Walter passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh.
Duane was born September 20, 1937, in Evansville to John Walter and Juanita Ruth (Stevenson) Harmon.
Duane served his county as a member of the United States Air Force. He was part of the Honor Guard in the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.
He was a member of the Rockport American Legion Post 254.
Duane was a charter member of the Spencer County Historical Society, serving in many roles including President and Vice-President. Duane was able to live out history by recreating Abraham Lincoln’s flatboat trip from Rockport to New Orleans twice and was named an honorary Louisiana Colonel to commemorate the achievement.
Duane retired from SIGECO Warrick Operations and went on to work at the Spencer County Visitors Center. In his free time he was a member of The Society of Indiana Pioneers, served as Vice-President of the Tri-State Dowsers, and was an award winning race walker.
Duane was a devout Christian who attended Larkin Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Duane is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Walter; daughter, Marla Scott (Jim); son, David Bullock (Tina); grandchildren, Derek, Kristina, Angela, Renee and Shawn; and great-grandchildren Ryley, Karlee, Peyton, Harlie and Janie; along with many other extended family members.
Visitation will be held at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport on Saturday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Services will be held at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tim Long officiating. Burial will take place at Mount Zion Cemetery in Richland.
