Huntingburg Police Department

Man arrested after pursuit

While patrolling at 1:46 a.m. on January 26, Huntingburg officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle at Main and 10th streets that had failed to dim while traveling north on Main. The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Austin Williams of Huntingburg, failed to stop. A pursuit ensued, going east on 8th Street, north on Washington, west on Church Avenue, and south on Van Buren, where Williams’ vehicle became airborne and landed approximately 90 feet from railroad tracks. The pursuit finally ended on Bretz Street, at which point officers say Williams exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Noticing a passenger left in the vehicle, officers conducted a high risk traffic stop. The passenger, a female, was treated by EMS on scene and transported to Memorial Hospital for injuries she sustained during the pursuit. Williams was eventually apprehended 12 hours later and was charged with resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness, reckless driving and aggressive driving. Huntingburg Police were assisted by the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Dubois County EMS and Huntingburg Fire Department.

Jasper Police Department

OWI arrest

Jasper Police were called to 1626 Newton Street in regard to a trespassing complaint on January 25. Upon arriving, officers located 26-year-old Grant Kimmel of Jasper and learned that officers were called to the same location earlier that day and had ordered Kimmel to leave the property. According to officers, Kimmel had a strong odor of alcohol on his person, and a preliminary breath test determined his blood alcohol content was 0.11. Kimmel then allegedly refused to submit to a field sobriety test or a chemical test. His vehicle was towed, and during inventory, two types of controlled substances were located inside, along with a marijuana cigarette. Kimmel was then arrested and charged with OWI with a previous conviction, level 6 felony; OWI refusal, class C misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance, class A misdemeanor; criminal trespass, class A misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.

Driver arrested after pursuit

On January 25, a Jasper Police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2010 Ford F150 that had failed to stop at a stop sign; however, according to police, the driver of the truck fled west on Division Road, committing multiple traffic infractions along the way, including striking a mailbox. Officers were able to get the vehicle stopped near the intersection of Division and Stewart roads. After a brief standoff, officers took the driver, 53-year-old John M. Hilgefort of Jasper, into custody. Hilgefort was charged with two counts of resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness, reckless driving, disorderly conduct, leaving the scene of an accident, and operating while intoxicated, along with multiple other infractions.

Bicycle pursuit leads to drug arrest

Jasper Police were dispatched to the corner of 6th and St. John streets after receiving two complaints of an altercation between two male subjects at that location. Upon officers’ arrival, a male subject exited the residence with a bicycle and began fleeing the scene. Officers pursued on foot and apprehended the subject, 47-year-old Virgil Lee Gordon Gilpatrick of Jasper, a short distance away. After investigation, officers determined the altercation was verbal only. However, Gilpatrick was placed under arrest for resisting law enforcement, and during a search of his person, officers located six grams of methamphetamine and a gram of marijuana. Gilpatrick was lodged in the Dubois County Security Center on charges of possession of methamphetamine, a level 5 felony; possession of marijuana, class A misdemeanor; and resiting law enforcement, a level 6 felony.
