Gerald “Dean” Bolin, age 56, of Dale, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at home.
He was born in Chrisney to Beverly (Hendrickson) and the late Gerald “Gary” Bolin, on January 25, 1967, the oldest of three sons.
A 1985 graduate of Heritage Hills High School, Dean went on to receive his Bachelors Degree in History Education from Indiana State University and, after teaching for a year, he returned to complete his Masters in Theater.
He worked for a number of years as deputy building inspector for various Spencer County communities under Building Inspector Phil Brown before joining the staff as an award-winning reporter/editor for the Spencer County Leader and Ferdinand News.
Health issues caused him to retire almost three years ago, but he continued to write both plays and the occasional article.
It was a well-kept secret the musical produced at the Lincoln Amphitheatre in 2019 entitled “Here I Grew Up” was written by Bolin, and when the director asked to purchase the rights to the musical, he donated it anonymously to be performed and enjoyed into perpetuity. His ability for storytelling knew no bounds, whether it was as an actor, a playwright, an author, a musician, a game designer, or a journalist.
Dean is survived by his mother, Beverly; his brother Chris and his wife Robin; his sister-in-law Natalie Bolin; nephews Jonathon Bolin and his wife, Mika; Joey Bolin and his wife Becca; nieces Morgan and Skye Bolin, and great-nephew Luke Bolin.
Dean was preceded in death by his father and brother, Brian.
Dean’s wishes were to be cremated. The family requests no flowers or gifts.
