Joetta Straughan, 74, of Rockport, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, in her home surrounded by family.

Joetta was born on March 5, 1949, to Max and Maxine Eble of Richland. She was the widow of the late Ron Straughan.

Joetta was a 1967 graduate of South Spencer High School. She married Thomas L. Hammers after graduation and started a family while living in Missouri. He preceded her in death. Life travels had her return home to later sell Mary Kay products and work at Credit Thrift in Evansville. Later years she spent living in Lexington, Kentucky, where she was a legal secretary and business owner, with her husband, Ron Straughan. She was diagnosed with MS in her early 40s and spent many years living with the debilitating disease.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ron, Joetta was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Sherry Bailey, of Missouri.

Joetta is survived by her son, Thomas “Mickey” Hammers and his wife, Angie, of Rockport; her grandsons, Mason and Cole Hammers of Rockport; her stepson, Rick Straughan of Missouri; her siblings, Roy Tharp and his wife, Rita, of Richland, John Tharp and his wife, Betty, of Rockport, Linda Vandiver and her husband, Stephen of Newburgh; sister-in-law, Patty Unice of Missouri; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are 10 a.m., Saturday, June 17, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Pastor Carl Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 16, and from 8 until 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Easter Seals Southwestern Indiana or Heart to Heart Hospice Indiana.

The family wants to thank all those who helped with Joetta’s care and special needs, including daughter-in-law Angie Hammers and Amanda Rodgers of Rockport, who were caretakers and friends who provided years of support.
