James “Jim” Roy Hevron, 75, of Newburgh, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021, surrounded by his family.
He was born on February 25, 1946, in Lincoln City, to the late Benjamin and Helen (Woods) Hevron. Raised alongside his three siblings, he graduated from Dale High School in 1964, and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Michel, on July 31, 1965. Shortly thereafter, they were blessed with two children, John and Julie.
James was a 56-year member of Operating Engineers Local 181. Widely considered the hardest-working man that his family, friends, and colleagues knew, James had an incredibly impressive career, starting out as a mechanic’s helper and earning his way to the position of President of two different divisions at Koester Contracting: Asphalt and Earth Moving. He later served as the Vice President of J.H. Rudolph and Companies, Inc., and retired in 2001. James was also a part owner and operator of Bull Island Oil Development and Black River Oil, and he served on the Board of Directors and as a consultant for Vigo Coal Company Inc. and Carbo Prill, Inc.
James was a member of the Spencer County Historical Society, Friends of Lincoln State Park, and The Abraham Lincoln Association. He enjoyed conducting research on the history of Spencer County and the history of the Lincoln family and their neighbors while in Spencer County. He also dedicated countless hours to the research and preservation of the Hevron and Woods family genealogies, and was very proud to have ancestors who were neighbors of the Lincoln family.
An avid outdoorsman, James enjoyed duck and goose hunting with his son John, and friends at Bull Island, fishing and camping with his grandchildren, and tending to his garden, especially his tomatoes. One of his greatest joys was cooking for his family and friends.
James is survived by his wife, Barbara Hevron; son, John Hevron (wife, Kelly) of Evansville; daughter, Julie Zehr (husband, Matt) of Morganfield, KY; five grandchildren, Anna Hevron, Steven Zehr, James Hevron, Jackson Zehr, and Mattilyn Zehr; and three step-granddaughters, Sydney Yune, Chloe Yune, and Gabby Yune. He is also survived by sisters, Beverly Kaiser (husband, Roger) of Carrollton, GA, Bonnie Graman of Fairfield, OH; brother, David Hevron (wife, Margie) of Holland; and many other beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, located at 5333 Old Indiana 261, Newburgh, IN 47630.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 27, at 11 a.m. at the Old Little Pigeon Cemetery in Lincoln State Park, Lincoln City. Limited seating, feel free to bring your own.
