The South Spencer girls soccer team may have wanted to pay tribute to the late Jimmy Buffett and his classic tune ‘Come Monday’ with a victory to begin the week.

But it turned out to be a tough Monday against highly touted Forest Park.

Unable to dig out of a first half hole despite a spirited effort, the Lady Rebels eventually dropped a 4-0 decision to the Class 1A, No. 13 ranked Rangers last Monday night in Bretzville.

South Spencer coach Katie Calhoun knows a rematch with Forest Park is a possibility in the post-season, but that’s not a guarantee because two other squads in the Sectional 48 field — Evansville Christian (No. 2) and Evansville Mater Dei (No. 5) have also been highly ranked this season.

“I would venture to say it’s got to be one of the toughest sectionals in 1A,” said the Lady Rebel boss. “The dark horse is kind of the mentality we’re taking. Nobody is looking at us, but we know what we can do.”

South Spencer proved that early on when they nearly jumped ahead.

The Lady Rebels were able to attack the Ranger goal in the first few minutes but came up empty.

“Soccer itself is such a momentum sport and my team is a momentum-based team. We like to capitalize on quick opportunities and counter when we can,” explained Calhoun. “If we could have scored that early goal when given the chance, I think things could have gone differently.”

Unfortunately for South Spencer, goals have been a bit hard to come by recently.

Even during a recent winning streak, which was snapped on Monday night, they hadn’t scored at a high rate.

“We’re on a little bit of a drought right now offensively,” confirmed Calhoun. “We’ve had a bit of an unlucky streak. We’ve had some good looks and some good opportunities, we’re just not putting them in the back of the net. Maybe that will bloom at the right time for us.”

Forest Park’s offense did actually bloom in the first half when they scored three goals in a span of about 21 minutes.

Addison Schipp gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with 32:24 remaining in the opening stanza, before Kiersten Voegerl made her presence felt. The Forest Park senior struck twice during a 12-minute stretch to give the Lady Rangers a 3-0 advantage at the intermission. Forest Park’s Aurora Jacob later added a goal with 25:41 left in the game to finish off the scoring.
