Lawrence “Larry” Estil Payne Jr., 88, of Rockport, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.

Larry was born in McQuady, Kentucky on March 29, 1935, to Lawrence Estil Sr. and Zora (Mattingly) Payne.

He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and had served in the United States Air Force and the United States National Guard. 

Larry drove a semi for 47 years, driving over 2 million miles with no accidents or speeding tickets. He had also been engaged in farm work. 

In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and squirrel hunting. He also sang karaoke and played guitar years ago.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Chelsea Burden, and his sisters, Catherine Crawford, Rebecca King and Burma Addis.

Larry is survived by his children, Frank Garrett, Tammy Winkler, Larry Payne and his wife, Jolan, Kenny Payne and his wife, Tina, and Cherie Burden and her husband, Scott; his grandchildren, Dane Winkler (Brennan), Wyatt Winkler, Jake Payne, Bailee Law (Chris), Sydney Payne, Kenny Garrett (Sarah), Emily Lillpop (Chris), Kourtney Bartlett, Samantha Payne, Christian Payne (Laura), Meghan Kremer (Robert), and Andrew Burden (Taylor); 14 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Regina Beeler and her husband, Larry, Peggy Schulte and her husband, Herb, Judy Dickens (Mike Embrey), Charles Payne, Donnie Ray Payne, Lucy Payne and her husband, Edgar, Debbie Hall and her husband, Larry, and Paula Kellems.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday, February 16, at St. Bernard Catholic Church 547 Elm St. Rockport, with Father Ron Kreilein officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation is from 10 until 11 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bernard Catholic Church.
