Matthew Alan (Matt) Conen, 40, of New Boston, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021. He was born March 14, 1981, to Dale Conen and Annette Parker in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Matthew was a 1999 graduate of Heritage Hills High School. After high school Matthew dedicated his life to serving others. He started with New Boston Fire Department where he volunteered until the time of his death. He was also the Chief of the Grandview Fire Department for the time he lived in Grandview. It was no surprise he was often the first on scene. He was awarded the Global Award in 2014 from the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association for his bravery during a rescue. He received First Responder of the year in 2014 from American Legion Post 254. In October 2015, he received his Medicolegal Death Investigator Certificate for the Coroner’s Office.

His greatest joy in life was his son, Jake. He always said no matter what, he wanted him to be taken care of. He enjoyed collecting model tractors. He loved being outdoors whether he was hunting, fishing, mowing, or just sitting in a chair. He lived a carefree life and always had a smile regardless of the situation. His passion in life was truly helping others. Whether he was helping within the Fire Department, as a friend, or as a neighbor he would go out of his way to help. He will be remembered by those that love him for his eyes, bright smile, and his selfless personality.

He is survived by his son, Jake Conen; parents Annette Parker of Tell City and Dale (Suzy) Conen, of New Boston; a sister Emily (Chris) Hansel, of Eureka Kansas; grandmother, Rose Parker of Tell City;  girlfriend Sarah Waninger at home; and stepbrothers Ben (Heather) Messmer of Ferdinand, and Tyler (Kelsey) Messmer of Huntingburg; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Matthew was preceded in death by an uncle, Steve Conen, grandfathers, Wilbur “Wib” Parker and John “Skip” Conen, grandmother Dorothy Conen, cousins, Taryn Harpenau and Kierstin Parker, and stepsister Sarah Messmer.
