Among the many holiday festivities taking place across the county, the Spencer County Council on Aging held a very special gathering Thursday, December 14 to mark the organization’s 50th year in operation. Volunteers, supporters, board members, and other leaders past and present filled the Spencer County Youth and Community Center that evening to mark this milestone. The Weber and Bettag families prepared a sizable meal for those present, and Darrin and Christina Ewing provided music. Countless other helpers were also critical in helping the organization see off its first half century in style.

One of the big attractions of the evening was a silent auction and cash raffle, with area farmers donating heavily on those fronts. SCCOA Executive Director Angela Turner reported the event managed to raise more than $4,000 thanks to the support of sponsors and support from across the community.

At its heart, however, the SCCOA is an organization driven by its committed members. The organization was pleased to recognize some of its longtime volunteers and the work they have put in to help those with mobility issues maintain regular access to local services and resources.

Driver William Hesson was recognized for more than 19 years of service. Fellow driver, Janice Weber, was also recognized for helping provide the meal that evening. Darren and Lisa Bettag were also credited with preparing and serving meals.

As the SCCOA’s logo implies, transportation is a pillar of the organization’s services. As of November 30, the SCCOA has logged more than 122,461 miles traveled, including 3,263 one-way trips and 2,186 out-of-county runs. This has necessitated the purchase of $17,583 in fuel, but it has helped serve more 237 clients.
