Rockport Elementary’s fifth graders welcomed veterans and family (often one and the same) to their school November 10 for a patriotic program honoring the sacrifices of those who served. Schools across the county participated in such events to herald the upcoming Veterans Day celebrations over the weekend.

Several individual students took center stage to speak of American civics, history, and the traditions associated with the United States military. These naturally included leading the crowd in the National Anthem and other songs, as well as the Pledge of Allegiance. Many students offered pledges of their own as well, vowing to honor the efforts of local veterans.

The event also featured a number of performances by students accompanied by traditional songs such as “You’re a Grand Old Flag” as well as the individual songs associated with each branch of the military. These often involved a chorus of kids proudly waving the flag as they sang their thanks to visiting veterans.

Many students also got a chance to visit with relatives among the assembled veterans and thank them in person before resuming the school day.
