Sylvia M. (Fischer) Gehlhausen, 93, of Newburgh, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Brickyard Healthcare – Woodlands Care Center.
Sylvia was born October 19, 1931, in Saint Meinrad, to Norbert and Lena (Vaal) Fischer. She retired from General Electric in Jasper, after working as a Manufacturing Assembly Line worker. In her later years, she worked at Pearl Laundry, doing alterations.
She was an avid dancer, enjoyed sewing and doing alterations, and was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She loved bowling and was in a bowling league for many years. Sylvia was a member of the Coterie Dance Club, the Eagles Club, the Owls Club, and the American Legion. She celebrated life with a smile and cherished being a mother and nana. She often said that she was most proud of having seven good kids.
Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Carla Boham (Daniel) of Littleton, NC and Gina Reece of Winston Salem, NC; sons, Dr. Terry Gehlhausen (Nancy) of Oakland City, Tim Gehlhausen (Kristy) of Newburgh, Lonny Gehlhausen (Kim) of Evansville, Kurt Gehlhausen (Serena) of Newburgh and Chris Gehlhausen (Denise) of Hutto, TX; sisters, Mary Ziliack of Ferdinand and Carol Harpenau (Ted) of Indianapolis; brothers, Kenneth Fischer (Sarah) and Stanley Fischer (Patty), both of Ferdinand; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Fischer of St. Anthony; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her first husband of 47 years, Charles H. Gehlhausen, who passed away in 1997; second husband of nine years, Oscar L. “Big O” Pfeiffer, who passed away in 2010; sister, Pat Albert; brothers, Henry Fischer (Shirley) and Leonard Fischer; and brother-in-law, David Ziliak.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, August 19 with Father Bernie Etienne officiating, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville. Burial followed in St. Ferdinand Cemetery, Ferdinand.
