Flat Ridge Inc. set up shop at Rockport City Hall to give away hundreds of turkeys to Spencer County residents Thursday, November 20 ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Volunteers from city hall, the Christian Resource Center and other organizations were joined by several helping hands from St. Bernard Catholic School.
The younger helpers braved the cold rain to hand out turkeys and bags of dry goods. Thanks to their help, the lengthy line of cars on Main Street and pedestrians on the sidewalk was cleared much faster, allowing everyone to get inside and dry off. In thanks for their support, students were allowed to take a turkey home for their families.
People started lining up for the giveaway well in advance of the noon starting time. Turnout for this event has been very strong over the last few years, even times of inclement weather. Next year the city plans to host the giveaway at the Rockport City Park to avoid traffic congestion on Main Street.
