William R. “Bill” Shirel, 89, of Owensboro, Kentucky, formerly of Richland, passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born in Grandview, on November 29, 1932, to the late Jack and Mary (Huser) Shirel.

Bill was a United States Marines veteran, having served in the Korean War. He had retired, after 40 years of service, from Inland Container in Evansville, where he was a production worker. He enjoyed NASCAR, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and I.U. basketball.

Bill is survived by his children, Mary Shirel, Bobbi Jo Cotton and her husband, Charles, and Mark Shirel; his grandchildren, Mandy Majors and her husband, Matthew, Billy Shirel and his wife, Peggy, Brian Shirel, Cassi Meyer and her husband, Edgar, Megan Cain and her husband, Brandon, and Mackenzi Wildermuth and her husband, Daniel; 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patty, who passed away in 2004; his son, Pud Shirel; his daughter, Susie Shirel; and two grandsons, Donnie Westfall, Jr. and Tyler Mohler.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday, January 13, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Brother Steve Mead officiating. Burial will follow at James Parker Cemetery in Hatfield, with military honors.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
