The Lincoln Heritage Public Library’s Dale Branch has a set of ghost-hunting equipment that patrons can check out to conduct their own expeditions into the unknown. The pack includes a digital thermometer, flashlight, two-way radios, a blacklight, an electromagnetic field gauge. Angie Hall of LHPL gave a brief demonstration of the devices and their uses Thursday evening.

A smartphone with a camera, particularly one with night vision is recommended to compliment the provided pack. These devices also provide an extra flashlight and a digital recorder. Pen and paper are also advised to keep notes.

The provided EMF meter measures electromagnetic radiation in an environment. Paranormal investigators hold that such radiation, particularly in high concentrations, can be evidence of a ghost or other phenomenon.

The trick is to find a spike in EMF readings in an area that can’t be explained away as bad wiring or a faulty device. To demonstrate this, Angie Hall of the library showed off the rather high readings the device got from an older electronic pencil sharpener.

“Obviously, it’s not haunted,” she joked.

Those who feel uneasy in some parts of their home may find a use for the borrowed EMF meter even if they are not partial to a supernatural explanation. High EMF levels can influence the brain in several ways, causing individuals to feel as if they are being watched or even inducing auditory or visual hallucinations. If distinctly high readings are consistently popping up in one part of the home, one might be able to identify faults in the wiring or a malfunctioning device.
