Imogene Ruth “Imie” (Golladay) Gibbs, 100, passed away peacefully at The Waters Nursing Home in Rockport, on Saturday, February 11, 2023.

She was born in East End, Saskatchewan Province, Canada on April 24, 1922, to the late Roy and Ticha (Hedrick) Golladay. Her late brother, William Bernard “Butch” was also born in East End.

The family returned to Spencer County when she was about four years old and settled in Eureka, a place she always held dear to her heart. In 1935, the family moved to the Knobs area in rural Rockport. In 1945, the family moved to the town of Rockport and that was home for most of her adult life.

She attended Eureka Elementary, Silverdale Elementary, and Rockport High School, graduating in 1940. She was the last surviving member of that class.

On December 21, 1945, she married Kenneth Hargis “Hargy” Gibbs. At the time of his death in 1991, they had been married 46 years.

Imie was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Rockport.

She had worked all her adult life in various jobs. Early jobs were at the Spencer County Courthouse in the Auditor, Recorder, and Welfare Departments. Her longest job (the one for which many students from that time will remember her) was as school secretary for Rockport Grade School and Rockport Jr. High School. In 1967, Hargy was transferred to Indianapolis by Indiana Bell and soon after, Imogene and the family moved to Mooresville. At that time, she work in the Indiana State Building as head payroll clerk in the Payroll Department which included over 1,000 employees.

Imogene’s foremost job was as Mom, Grandma, MamMaw, Great-Grandma and Great-Great-Grandma. She enjoyed her family most of all and gathering together for various holidays. She still got excited about Christmas up until the most recent one.

She had attended a few art classes at Evansville College and was often sketching on a drawing pad.

In addition to her parents and brother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hargy, and sons, Pat and Don.

She is survived by her daughters, Gwynn (Mike) Turner and Jane (Steve) Wheaton; daughters-in-law, Angie Gibbs and Terrie Gibbs; grandchildren Jennifer (Keith) Adams, Ken (Kim) Gibbs, Dylan Gibbs, Ticha (Ryan) Causey, Matt and Doug Wheaton, Mandy (Jon) Bretz and Morgan (Andy) Fischer; great-grandchildren Zack (Sheridan) Adams, Amber Adams, Kailey, Kori and Kennedy Gibbs, Lincoln Gibbs, Halle (Logan) Gibson, Garrett Causey, Stella and River Bretz and Knox Fischer; great-great grandchild Lily Bea Adams; and, the last cat standing, Lillie Gray.

Imogene would never have thought of herself as special. Anyone who knew her, knows different. She had a strong faith in God and Jesus. She lived her life by the Golden Rule and set that example for all of her family.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 17, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with Pastor Carl Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Rockport.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
