St. Bernard Catholic School held its first ever Literacy Night Wednesday, October 8 at the school’s shelter house. It was a beautiful fall evening to sit around a campfire, make s’mores and read books together, and that was exactly what students had in store.
Several community leaders, including Mayor Cathy Kirkpatrick, Judge Jon Dartt, Chief Deputy Ryan Parsley, Natasha Boyer of Spencer County Emergency Medical Services and Commissioner Mac Webb, stopped by to read some of their favorite children’s books to visiting students. Each reading station had its own theme, with many of them evoking a campground feel.
Those who visited enough reading stations could earn various prizes, and all attendees walked away with goodie bags and free books of their own. Prizes were donated by the Builder’s Club.
To make the camping aesthetic that much more authentic, roasted hot dogs were also available throughout the evening. Many kids took the opportunity to read their new books in some of the tents set up on the school grounds.

Some stations on the grounds invited young readers to hang out in tents by a campfire to get a head start on their new literature collection.
