Jasper artist Myra Schuetter’s paintings, “Political Circus” and “Listen”, are part of an exhibit at the Indiana State Museum commemorating the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment and women’s voting rights. The exhibit titled “Cause and Æffect: Art that Speaks Out” includes pieces in a variety of mediums by numerous artists from Indiana whose works promote awareness of social, cultural, political, and personal issues that not only impact women but society as a whole.
Schuetter’s work “Political Circus” was painted in response to Jasper’s 2015 mayoral election which ended in a tie, and the subsequent recount which belied the idea that every vote counts.
Her painting “Listen” is a statement about the divisive nature of society today and how, while those on both sides of issues are quite similar as people, they simply do not want to listen to any other point of view.
The exhibition opened June 19 and will end August 2. The Indiana State Museum is located at 650 West Washington in Indianapolis.
